In a small publishing office on the outskirts of Manchester, the editor watched another monthly traffic report slide into the red. Referrals from Google, once the lifeblood of the site, had fallen again. Across the Atlantic and in newsrooms from Berlin to Sydney, the same pattern repeated. On 20 July, The New York Times revealed how Google's deepening integration of artificial intelligence into search is keeping users inside its own ecosystem, starving independent websites of visitors and raising fresh doubts about the future of an open internet.

The changes have arrived in stages. Google introduced AI Mode in 2025, swapping traditional lists of hyperlinks for conversational replies generated by its Gemini chatbot. Then in May 2026 it altered the search box for the first time in 25 years, letting users attach photos and videos and dispatch AI agents to handle queries. Usage exploded. AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling each quarter. Overall Google searches hit record levels in the period leading up to that redesign.

Yet the gains for Google have come at a visible cost elsewhere. Analyses show AI Overviews and similar features have cut click-through rates to external sites by 30 to 70 percent, depending on the query. Roughly 60 percent of Google searches now end without a single click to another website. Organic click-through rates for queries that trigger AI summaries have dropped by as much as 61 percent. Publishers have logged year-on-year declines in Google referral traffic of up to 38 percent in the early months of 2026.

More than half of all web traffic is already non-human, according to Cloudflare data covering the period from June 2025 to April 2026. Automated agents scrape, summarise and repackage content before ordinary readers ever see the original page. The result is a quiet enclosure of the once-open web. Information that used to flow freely through links now often stops at Google's neatly phrased answer.

The human stakes behind the data

Travel bloggers in rural Spain, climate researchers in Kenya, independent journalists in eastern Europe: each has felt the same squeeze. A single site's traffic does not simply represent lost advertising revenue. It funds reporting that governments or corporations might prefer to ignore, sustains specialised knowledge that algorithms struggle to replicate, and underpins the messy, decentralised exchange of ideas that once defined the internet.

Google co-founder Larry Page once set a different standard. In the company's 2004 IPO letter he wrote that a well-functioning society should have abundant, free and unbiased access to high-quality information. The promise was clear. Search would connect people to the widest possible range of sources rather than substitute its own voice for them.
