Manchester United wasted little time in the 2026 summer window. On 13 July they announced the capture of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, the first arrival of what looks like a measured rebuild under head coach Michael Carrick.
The 22-year-old Brazilian arrives with pedigree. He has captained Brazil at under-23 level, lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and showed real leadership during an impressive loan at Strasbourg, where he scored 11 goals, provided five assists and wore the armband on multiple occasions. Back at Chelsea last season he made 43 appearances and posted the highest pass-completion rate plus the most progressive passes per 90 minutes of any Premier League midfielder under 22.
Those numbers matter. In a league that prizes control and forward thrust, Santos offers both. He can sit as a number six or push on as an eight, exactly the sort of flexible option clubs chase when trying to stay competitive without breaking the bank on unproven gambles.
A deal that makes sense for everyone
The fee sits at £48 million plus £2 million in bonuses, with Chelsea keeping a 10 percent sell-on clause. Not pocket change, yet hardly reckless in today’s market. It is the kind of voluntary transaction that defines English football’s social market economy: two clubs agreeing terms because both see value, supporters ultimately the beneficiaries through stronger squads and fresher legs.
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s director of football, put it plainly.
Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch. He was a key target for us in an important position, so we are delighted that he will join Michael’s squad so early in pre-season. Despite already having extensive experience, leadership abilities and proving his talent at the highest level, Andrey still has enormous potential to develop further, and we cannot wait to see him flourish at Manchester United.
Santos himself sounded genuinely excited, the way only a young player still chasing boyhood dreams can.
