Police Scotland has confirmed that a serving officer carried out rapes and violent sexual attacks on at least nine women over a period of at least 14 years.
PC Alan Greer, 47, died by suicide on 6 May 2026, two weeks after his arrest. The first known attack took place in Glasgow in 2012. The victim reported the rape late in 2025. That complaint triggered a major investigation by the force's Anti-Corruption Unit at the end of 2025.
Greer was arrested on 24 April 2026 after a search of a property in the Wishaw area. He was released pending further enquiries and suspended from duty. Officers returned to the same address on 5 May. The following day he was found dead. There were no suspicious circumstances.
Detectives recovered thousands of graphic videos and images from devices seized during the search. According to The Herald, the material showed that Greer had used hundreds of prostitutes throughout his police career. Five of the nine identified victims were sex workers attacked while he was off duty.
The BBC reported that detectives have so far uncovered nine victims but anticipate that many more will come forward. Some of the attacks were so violent they would have amounted to charges of attempted murder.
The first victim was a woman who had contacted police to report a separate crime. Greer raped her in her own home. That single report, more than 13 years later, exposed a pattern of offending that had continued undetected inside the force.
