"We won't beat Britain's new right if we are consumed by infighting and pulling in different directions," he warned. The phrasing is telling. Even as he reaches for the language of unity, the shadow of Reform looms large in Labour's rear-view mirror. Polls have shown the party trailing, and this rapid leadership churn feels less like renewal than a desperate attempt to paper over the cracks.

How it ends will depend less on fine words about reindustrialisation than on whether anyone in this new team can break the cycle of Westminster flinching.
