What followed was a continuation of the same pattern: very little rain, with some northern areas and the Upper Severn receiving less than 2 percent of their expected July totals and most catchments seeing under 20 percent.
If the pattern holds for the remaining days of the month, July 2026 is on course to become the driest July recorded in Wales in nearly 190 years. The consequences are already measurable. River flows have dropped to new monthly minima in several places. Water temperatures have climbed above 20 degrees Celsius. Groundwater levels are falling and soils have dried out to a degree that stresses every dependent system. These are not abstract indicators. They translate directly into pressure on rivers, groundwater, wildlife, fisheries, land management, agriculture and the wider natural environment.
Following a review of hydrological and environmental conditions across Wales, we have decided to move parts of north Wales and the Upper Severn from Prolonged Dry Weather to Drought status.
The statement from Natural Resources Wales carries the weight of accumulated data rather than alarm. It also notes that if these conditions continue, the month will set a historic low. That forecast rests on simple arithmetic: sustained high pressure, minimal precipitation and elevated temperatures have combined to drain the landscape of its usual summer buffer. Farmers face reduced grass growth and difficulties watering livestock. Aquatic ecosystems show signs of stress. The risk of wildfire in drying habitats has risen. Yet the picture is not uniformly dire. Reservoir levels across Wales remain healthy overall, and there are no immediate concerns for public water supplies.
Dŵr Cymru responded to elevated customer demand by introducing a Temporary Use Ban on 19 July in parts of Mid and South Ceredigion, North Pembrokeshire and North Carmarthenshire. The measure is targeted and temporary, reflecting a preference for measured intervention over blanket restrictions. Such steps illustrate the difference between reactive conservation and proactive stewardship. The deeper question this drought poses is how communities build lasting resilience. Abstract emission targets and top-down environmental edicts have too often diverted resources from the practical infrastructure, storage capacity and management systems that actually protect water security. What matters is adaptive, evidence-based policy rooted in national priorities, one that avoids loading unnecessary costs onto households or undermining energy affordability.
Private sector innovation and local knowledge have repeatedly demonstrated their value in resource stewardship. Farmers, water companies and community groups understand the rhythms of their catchments far better than distant regulators armed with ideological checklists. By focusing on tangible engineering solutions, improved catchment management and sensible demand-side measures, Wales can convert these recurring dry spells from crises into manageable tests of preparedness. The current episode, while serious, also offers a reminder that rural livelihoods and natural systems both depend on pragmatic decisions rather than performative gestures.
